DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co both reported weaker-than-expected U.S. sales gains in June as they again dialed back deals for car buyers despite the shaky economy.

The gain was the result of continued solid retail demand for the company's wide selection of fuel-efficient vehicles. Retail sales for GM's brands rose 16 percent for the month, compared to a year ago, and were 4 percent higher than May.

Ford Motor Co. said Friday its June U.S. sales rose 10.4 percent on strong demand for small cars and pickup trucks with six-cylinder engines, which are more efficient than the traditional V-8.
