Pine gathering of classics cruises into popularity

Antique Cars - September 8, 2010 - 4:58pm
The Starlite Car Cruise held each Friday in the summer drew about 200 cars in the early part of the decade, but because of family activities, ample parking, word of mouth and radio advertising, it is attracting between 1,200 and 1,600 cars these days.

"Rebuilt" 69 pacer on ebay

I'm pretty sure this "car" was discussed before (but I can't find it).
It was on ebay 11/03 in MI. Rusty shell, stripped, rusted in two. Only things left were tags, harness, axle, and brake setup. Sold for ~$3000.
On ebay again 2/07 in PA - no axle, just rockers and ws frame.

POP was with the car, so it's real. Tag was off the car.

Now, it's completely restored with an L78 in it. :)

stainless fuel tank sender unit?

Camaro Tech - September 8, 2010 - 4:55pm
Hey all,

I've poked around in the forums a little here and didn't find an answer. So I'll ask... are any of the reproduction fuel tank sending units out there made of stainless steel? Examples - Spectra Premium, Classic Industries, etc.

I had thought that my original sender was made out of stainless and the rust that was on there was due to adhesion of tank rust particles and gas gunk. Took it to the wirewheel yesterday and found that wasn't the case... the whole line down to the sock looks like swiss cheese!

I don't want to replace the sender with another unit only to have to replace it again 10 years later... well, assuming the rubber seals, float, etc. hold up. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!
Chris

PS - almost forgot. It's a 68 camaro.

68 - Wheel Studs?

Camaro Tech - September 8, 2010 - 4:14pm
I just upgraded to American Torque Thrust 2 rims 17x8 front, 17x9.5 rear. I put 235/45/17's on the front and 275/40/17's on the rear.

As I pulled out of the tire shop I heard the dreaded rub sound as I made my first corner. After checking the clearance the problem is that the 275's hit the inner wall above the tire (i'm upgrading to edelbrock IAS, but that's another story). The new shocks won't solve the problem completely, so I've looked at adding a 5/16 spacer between the drum hub and the rim. The problem with this is that the wheel studs will be a 1/4 too short.

Has anyone used a larger knurl (.475) instead of the .472 that's standard? I can't find 7/16 by 1-3/4" length with a .472 knurl, so the only option is a larger knurl. Also the larger stud has a slightly longer knurl length 27/64 instead of 11/32 (22/64).

Has anyone used a larger/longer knurl and/or longer bolt (1-3/4) and a 5/16 spacer?

Does anyone recommend or not recommend this?

Thanks!

67-68 Single DIN Radio Mounting Solution

Camaro Tech - September 8, 2010 - 3:42pm
TC,

Wanted to share a solution that allowed the Single DIN radio in my '68 to look as clean as possible in my stock dash area. I'm not going into the entire radio install but rather concentrate on fabricating the required bezel itself. Here's how it all turned out....

My dash was already hacked (not badly) for a single din radio so we'll start there.

I wanted the radio faceplate trim to look as "original" as possible - so I started with a first gen repro faceplate that's easily picked up at many of our sponsors.

I then cut out the bezel's center section using a rotary tool and cut-off wheels until the radio sleeve fit through. The top and bottom of that cut-out needs to be a little larger than the radio (or sleeve) to allow the bezel to tilt forward about 30 degrees. The vertical cuts are straight although they don't appear so in the picture.

Then the pattern for the filler piece above was created. The actual filler was made from 20gauge steel (available in small pieces from home depot). This thickness material was strong enough yet easily workable. Snips were used to cut out the metal pattern, then all the bends were made with a small bench vice prior to cutting the center hole out. The filler panel was then filed - removing any burrs, and covered with vinyl (donated from an old 'vert well liner).

The filler was then assembled onto the radio sleeve followed by the chrome bezel. It was all then sandwiched together on the dash and then fastened down. Here's another view....

Your mileage may vary...
Enjoy,
Dave

Brake line fittings colored?

Camaro Tech - September 8, 2010 - 3:34pm
Does anyone know for sure whether the anodized fittings on the MC brake lines were colored? Red, green and blue is what they are on the set that Inline Tube sells, but I don't remember them ever having any color on them. Thanks.

70 headliner help

Camaro Tech - September 8, 2010 - 2:59pm
I am redoing my headliner in my 1970 ss, I was wondering what parts should I order to do a complete headliner. I have a makeshift one right now so all the parts that came on the car are long gone. I also need imformation on the trim molding on the front of the headliner near the top of the front window. Is this suppose to be a single piece or is it two pieces? Also where do I put sunvisors at?

any pics or advice would help greatly thanks.

World Class/G-Force T-5 into a 1969??

Camaro Tech - September 8, 2010 - 2:09pm
Hello All,

After 2+ years I got my Camaro back. Times have been tough for alot of us but a good deal is still a good deal and I have some questions on a High End T-5 with some goodies in it...

There is a a very nice 1984 Z28 for sale around me. It has a World Class T-5 with some G-Force Goodies in the trans....The trans is still in the car and the car runs. The seller wants to part out the 350 engine and T-5 trans. He says he's gonna go 496 big block w/ a thm400.... The T-5 trans has roughly 1,000 miles on it and he says it's in great shape. I haven't had a chance to look at the car. He wants $750 obo for the trans, clutch, flywheel, shifter, scattershield, pedals aka the whole kit and kaboodle. Sounds like a good deal and I can't afford to drop $3G++ on a complete TKO 600.

My car has a Super T-10 in it right now w/ a RAM sintered iron clutch and I know about the chatter.......Lack of Overdrive really stinks with 4:11 gears in my Moser 12 bolt and a 350 mouse engine. I'm looking for good, reliable cheap overdrive that won't set me back a ton of cash right now.

Question: what needs to be done as far as the shifter & cross member to make a high end T-5 work in my 1969 Camaro, and will it work under normal duty? I know about the shifter clearance issues smacking the back or front of the console in 2nd & 4th or 1st & 3rd w/ a T-10 and a center counsel. And yes I know the shifter and or bracket may have to be custom made to work. I removed the 4 speed face plate on my center console and it worked ok...I expect the same shifter issues with any T-5 high end or low end and a center counsel.

Any and all replies are welcomed. Be safe, Happy Motoring and Thank You!:beers:

Insurance company aims to save people money

Auto Insurance - NEWS - September 8, 2010 - 1:29pm
When people look at purchasing vehicle insurance, some may see it as something they are forced by the law to do and look for the cheapest rate possible, while others are more concerned with the available coverage, reliability and response time of a company to a claim.
